Card making ideas

It can be easy to feel short of card making ideas when first looking at a card blank but there are plenty of sources of inspiration out there which can give you that great idea. Whether it is seeing a concept you want to try yourself or encountering the perfect card making embellishment or miniature and building up an idea around it, there are as many ways of coming up with card making ideas as there are card craft fans.

Card making

When planning to get involved in a spot of card making, a key decision should be the theme which will form the basis of the product. A good way to arrive at some card making ideas could be to consider the occasion it is being made for - an Easter card could easily use some of the occasion's most famous themes, such as rabbits, eggs, flowers or even Easter bonnets. In contrast, card making ideas for birthdays will often take the age and gender of the recipient into account, whether this is designed to be cute, funny, exciting - or even all three!

Card blanks

Once you've arrived at a card making idea, the next step is to buy a card blank to use it on. These are available in a range of sizes, from A6 or DL to small square and A5. Card blanks can come with or without envelopes and are usable with many inkjet printers, although it is always worth checking they are compatible before placing an order.

Card making embellishments

The next step should be to stock up on any card making embellishments your design needs. With a wide variety of these on the market, it is worth having a browse before settling on a particular choice. Whether looking for 3D stickers that can add another dimension to a completed card, beads and gems that make sure it sparkles, or silk flowers that will let it bloom, there are a huge number of card making embellishments available.

Card making embellishments do not need to remain decorative elements of a design but can actually form its base. Items such as brass stencils can allow card craft fans to emboss foil onto their products, while exploring decoupage can result in a wide range of exciting designs. With this card craft, a variety of paper cut-outs are incorporated into a design, but recently 3D decoupage has also become a wide trend, with these being layered to create the appearance of an extra dimension on a card.

Card craft

Card craft does not need to be learnt in one go but can be developed over the course of your card-designing career. There are plenty of easy designs and templates available for first-timers and, as a card craft novice's confidence grows, it becomes easier to add in card making embellishments and other extras. In no time at all, a beginner can start to develop their own card making ideas from scratch and start to transform these into a reality.
